Spot the Fake: Your Guide to Real News

Spot the Fake: Your Guide to Real News “A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.” This quote by Mark Twain has proved to be truer than ever before. In today's digital world, false information spreads rapidly, causing real-world harm. From misleading headlines to outright deception, fake news poses a significant challenge. The consequences can be severe, including eroding trust and dividing communities. A study at MIT reveals that fake news spreads more faster, deeper and broadly than the truth. The truth rarely spreads beyond a 1000 people whereas the most contentious fake news in their sample regularly spread between 1000 and a 100 thousand people. Another revelation was that humans were more likely to spread fake news than the truth compared to bots. For instance, misinformation about COVID-19 caused serious harm. Over 6,000 people were hospitalized and at least 800 died in the first three months of 2020 alone due to false informa

Media and Misinformation POEM: Shadows of Doubt

Image
Shadows of Doubt Shadows creep where truth once stood A labyrinth of lies where truth is concealed Thronging with info The net’s just like a cotton-filled pillow I just don’t know what’s right what’s wrong Will this trap continue lifelong?   I feel so helpless So uninformed or rather I’d say misinformed That I’m being stormed It leaves me feeling like I don’t know who to believe   My worry deepens day by day Why do we have to pay For the evil and political intents Of the media presidents Who unfurl a curtain on the turn of events To merely disorient and create dents In the society resulting in immense torments   Be it the media traditional or social Biases are on the way Ranging from political to algorithmic Why are we being targeted and trapped In the relentless war of profits rhythmic     If we’re misinformed How can we understand the world around us? This is not fair But if we can’t change the world Let’s start the change

Poem: What Have We Done? - World Environment Day

Image
What Have We Done? The one who loves us like a mother Who is one-of-a-kind and like no other Giving shelter now and forever Our first home is our mother earth Why are we welcoming her with dirt?   For she doesn’t deserve the hatred In the form of negligence and our selfish acts From oil spills To pervasive smoke from mills From greenhouse gas emissions To detrimental chemicals   Ice caps melting are her tears The smoke and forest fires is her rage To the acid rain demonstrating her downcast in the cage How can we be so thankless?   It’s time that we change Save every water drop And not cut every crop To start another factory flop Skyrocketing destruction to the top What have we done to our sweet home? Come on let’s bring our actions to a STOP !! -Kavya Mehta

Sapphire Souls, Golden Dreams....World Cup Time

Image
Sapphire Souls, Golden Dreams Flags held high Exuberance unfurling through the sky Faces painted with stripes of saffron, white with a blue chakra and green on the side Heads held up high with pride And a spark in their eyes As the blue jersey wearers in themselves confide that lits up the eyeballs as the power flies to all and supplies   Glued to their TV sets day and night The young and the old with delight As the blue jersey wearers fight like a knight With all their might As the hope ignites and shines too bright Hoping for India to take another flight and reach new heights What a sight for all tonight!   Stadium run out of tickets Eyes glued on to sixes, fours and wickets And as the umpire will raise the finger The crowd will proclaim their ecstasy To view another wicket taken by our cricket team The arena will echo with shouts and screams     The 13 th cup edition And our team’s ambition A dream envisioned by all To grab

Poem: Faithful friendship...Happy friendship day!

Image
Faithful friendship A feeling of blossom An everlasting connection That doesn't break with distance But by the bonds of heart To express itself, it does not need a rostrum It is so unique and awesome   Friends are like pearls Which might tarnish but never lose value Pearls that don’t lie on the seashore For which you must dive to find   A friend in need is a friend indeed The saying you must have surely heard Is for the friend who is like curd Lightens all the spices and makes things sweet To have you complete   Leave the world behind For it says you have no friend true in time For the hatred it shows towards you To portray you are all alone so that you discontinue   Little does it know the inner self is the everlasting truthful friend That can soothe the bruise And never itself accuse   It's common to feel lonely And believe you've no buddies It's time you come out of this bubble And welcome your

Father's day

Happy Father’s Day! Father’s day is celebrated on every 3rd Sunday of June. It is a day of honouring our fathers which gives us an opportunity to express our love and gratitude towards them and also encourages fathers to spend quality time with their children and instill them noble values and manners. Father’s Day is celebrated worldwide to recognize the contribution that fathers and father-figures make to the lives of their children. The day is held on various dates across the world and different regions maintain their own traditions of honouring fatherhood.  The presence and involvement of a father is unlike anything else in the universe. That’s because dads mimic what our heavenly Father does for us, His children—He protects, shelters, comforts and loves. "The most precious things a father can provide are time, attention and love." -Tim Russert.  Happy Father’s Day! -Kavya Mehta
